Hot water is one of the biggest energy uses in a home. That’s why more and more customers ask us whether it’s worth replacing their electric water heater (the termo) with a heat pump water heater, known in Spain as aerotermia ACS.
How they differ
An electric water heater heats the water with an element: all the energy it uses comes from the grid.
A heat pump water heater works like an air conditioner in reverse: it takes heat from the air and transfers it to the water in the tank. For every unit of electricity it uses, it delivers several units of heat to the water. That ratio is called the COP and, depending on the model and the air temperature, it is several times the electricity used.
The result: for the same hot water, a heat pump needs considerably less electricity than an electric water heater.
What is needed to install one
- Location. A utility room, garage or plant room with enough air. If the space is small, the air intake can be ducted outside.
- Drain. Like an air conditioner, it produces condensate that needs to be drained.
- Water and power supply, like any water heater.
There are floor-standing and wall-mounted models, and different capacities depending on how many people live in the house.
Ariston NUOS heat pumps
We work with the Ariston NUOS range and, as the official service centre, we also take care of maintenance and repairs. If we maintain it, its warranty is extended from 2 to 5 years.
Is it worth it for you?
It depends on how much hot water you use, the space available and the condition of your current installation. On the visit we look at it with you and tell you whether it makes sense to replace your water heater.
