When a hot water or heating appliance stops, it is natural to think it has broken down. Sometimes it has, but sometimes the cause is simple. These are the safe checks you can do before calling the service centre.
1. Check the electricity
See whether the display is on and whether the trip switch or a circuit breaker has gone in the fuse box. If it trips every time you reset it, don’t keep trying: that points to an electrical fault.
2. Gas boilers: pressure and supply
- System pressure. The boiler’s pressure gauge usually shows the pressure of the heating water. If it is well below normal, the boiler may lock out. The manual explains how to top it up and to what pressure.
- Gas valve. Check that the gas valve is open and that you have gas supply, for example at the hob.
3. Write down the error code
If the display shows a code, write it down together with the model of the appliance, which is on the rating plate. With those two details the technician arrives knowing what to look for and, often, with the right spare part.
4. One reset, only one
Many appliances have a reset function. You can try it once. If the error comes back, don’t keep resetting it: it’s better to have it checked by a technician.
What not to do
- Open the casing or touch internal components.
- Bypass sensors or safety devices.
If you smell gas, close the gas valve, ventilate, don’t switch any electrical appliances on or off, and call your gas supplier’s emergency number (in Spain, 112 for any emergency).
